The Legend of Hercules and the Birth of Tropea

Legend has it that, a long time ago, the mighty Hercules, the strongest hero in Greek mythology, was returning from one of his extraordinary adventures. As he sailed along the Tyrrhenian coast of Calabria, he caught sight of a majestic cliff rising above the sea. The crystal-clear waters, the rocky promontory that seemed to protect the land, and the breathtaking scenery left him speechless. Hercules came ashore and walked across the headland. According to the legend, he was so captivated by the beauty of the place that he proclaimed it a land destined for a great future. Believing it to be the perfect location for a settlement, he decided to found a small village that, over the centuries, would become the beautiful town of Tropea. Since then, tradition says that Tropea has carried with it the strength and courage of the great hero. Even today, when the sun sets over the sea and the cliff is bathed in golden light, many like to imagine that the spirit of Hercules still watches over this extraordinary place. Of course, this is a legend but it reflects the deep bond between the people of Tropea and their land, celebrating a beauty considered worthy of the admiration of even the greatest of heroes. And, as the legend tells us, everyone who comes to Tropea, just like Hercules, inevitably falls in love with it.

Events

Tropea is not just a postcard-perfect destination to admire; it is a town to experience. Throughout the year, its historic centre comes alive with events that celebrate faith, culture, and local traditions. The most important celebration takes place on September 9th, when the town honours its patron saint, Our Lady of Romania. The streets of the historic centre are illuminated with festive lights, the statue of the Virgin Mary is carried through the town in a solemn procession accompanied by hymns and prayers, and the evening ends with a spectacular fireworks display reflected in the sea. Another deeply moving event is the Good Friday procession, known as "I Tri da' Cruci" ("The Three Crosses"), one of the most evocative religious celebrations in Calabria. The streets of Tropea become the stage for the reenactment of Christ's Passion, creating an atmosphere of deep devotion shared by both residents and visitors. On August 15th, the Feast of Our Lady of the Island is celebrated at the iconic Sanctuary of Santa Maria dell'Isola, the symbol of Tropea. The religious celebrations culminate in a beautiful sea procession, while the rest of the day is filled with performances, entertainment, and festivities, making Ferragosto one of the most anticipated events for both the local community and the many tourists visiting the town. Summer is also the season of culture and entertainment. In July, the Teatro d'aMare Festival transforms squares and historic buildings into open-air stages, hosting theatre performances, dance shows, exhibitions, and cultural events. Throughout July and August, warm summer evenings are filled with live concerts, traditional folk music, classical performances, and open-air shows, creating a lively atmosphere that keeps both locals and visitors enjoying the town until late at night. In September, the Tropea Film Festival welcomes filmmakers, actors, and cinema enthusiasts with film screenings, cultural meetings, and special guests, further strengthening Tropea's reputation as an important cultural destination. Tropea offers far more than crystal-clear waters and breathtaking views. Every celebration, concert, and festival tells the story of a town that proudly preserves its traditions while warmly welcoming visitors from all over the world. Because Tropea is not simply a place to visit—it is a place to experience, to listen to, and to carry in your heart long after you leave.

October brings a shift in atmosphere, musical language, and rhythm. Blue Jazz Tropea is taking shape and unveiling its program: 10 evenings, 20 musical ensembles, two main town squares as venues, and a full month dedicated to African-American music, Latin sounds, and their various fusions. The festival's inaugural edition kicks off on Friday, October 2, and runs through Saturday, October 31, with events every Friday and Saturday evening in Piazza Ercole and Piazza Vittorio Veneto. The city itself becomes an open-air stage—stretching from the sea to the squares, from sunset into the night—inviting locals, guests, and travelers to experience a fresh cultural offering designed to keep Tropea vibrant, appealing, and distinctive even in the autumn. "Blue Jazz Tropea," notes Mayor Giovanni Macrì, "was conceived as both a creative workshop and a cultural investment. We aim to establish a permanent fixture on the city’s calendar—one capable of drawing visitors to Tropea, supporting local businesses, offering new reasons to stay, and reinforcing the strategy of extending the tourist season that we have been consistently working on." The festival is rooted in jazz—in its elegance and its capacity for improvisation, dialogue, and fostering connections. However, the program expands its musical scope to include blues, swing, Latin sounds, and diverse musical styles. The lineup features acts ranging from the Stolen Jazz Trio to the Sasà Calabrese Trio, the Collettivo Musicale Calabro, and the Francesco Caligiuri Group (Olimpo feat. Michel Godard); from Bruno Marrazzo & Rosa Martirano to the Giuseppe Santelli Trio; from Nova Luna to the Nauplia Quartet; from Swinging Four to 3 for Queen and Toxicity Duo; from DiStella feat. Federfolla to Even Trio; from the Myriad Jazz Quartet to the Rocco Riccelli Quartet; and from the Nives Raso Latin Jazz Quartet to Quel Trio feat. From the Lorenzo Iorio Quartet to The Axolotl Project and Body&Soul, artists like Sebastiano Ragusa will take center stage across these ten evenings. This inaugural edition will also serve as a testing ground—an opportunity to experiment, listen, improve, and shape the festival's future. The goal goes beyond simply organizing musical events; it aims to give the month of October a new identity within Tropea’s calendar, bridging the gap before the city transitions into the Christmas Village and the holiday season festivities. "We provide the public squares," concludes Macrì, "the city offers its magic, and the musicians bring their talent." Blue Jazz Tropea was born with this ambition: to transform October into a month of music, connection, quality, and shared beauty. The first stage kicks off on October 2nd. And this October, Tropea plays "black" music.
